Test ends in draw as starlet Stella shines on debut

Rain delays meant the Test cricket match between Australia and India ended in a draw last night, yet it wasn’t the game’s outcome dominating headlines.

Aussie Test debutant Stella Campbell claimed two wickets in 14 first-innings overs, leaving coach Matthew Mott “very excited”.

“I thought Stella really showed what she could do, bustling in and hitting a wicket,” Mott said in the post-game press conference.

Mott wasn’t the only expert who was public in praise; a former Australian captain is also a fan of the pace bowler.

Lisa Sthalekar, a 187-time international all-rounder, commentated Campbell’s debut and noted “she’s only going to get better”.

“She came in, looked strong at the crease and bowled with some good heat,” Sthalekar said.

“Her getting stronger will assist in her hitting the crease even harder and being able to catapult her body through the crease to generate more pace.”

Campbell stands at just under 180 cm tall and Sthalekar knows “she’ll utilise that to her full advantage”.

Despite outshining all but one of her bowling counterparts on the scorecard, Campbell, 19, never expected the limelight this early on.

“I’d kind of forgotten the tour was going to happen,” the pace bowler said.

“I didn’t even have it in my mind that I was going to be there.”

Campbell bowled 18 overs in the Test; three maidens, 66 runs and the wickets of Taniya Bhatia then Deepti Sharma came within those.

There was no time for her to bat in the second innings, but she faced one ball at no. 11 in the first when she was “probably the most nervous [she’d] ever been”.

“I remember sitting on the bench, I was dead silent and just watching every ball as closely as I coulds,” she said.

“I faced the first ball, I think I got hit in my pads, then Meg [Lanning] declared the next ball.”

“It was all a bit frantic in the end there, but it was cool to have batted in a Test match and survived.”

Having idolised Mitchell Johnson and now-teammate Ellyse Perry in her younger days, it was another fast-bowling icon who presented Campbell with her baggy green.

The “inspirational” Mitch Starc handed Campbell Baggy Green no. 178, leaving the teenager “a bit overwhelmed”.

“[The presentation] was so cool because [Starc] is an outstanding player and an even better person,” Campbell said.

“He’s just so caring and willing to help out where he [can].”

“It was a bit surreal actually feeling it and now owning it and just having it in my bag; it’s kind of weird to think I actually own a baggy green.”

Campbell will now look to qualify for her first WBBL finals series with the Sydney Sixers, but not while forgetting the “prestige” of being a Test cricketer.

“I loved the Test and learning the strategy behind it,” she said.

“I hadn’t worn white pads since my junior cricket days, so that in itself was pretty cool.”
